Meet Joey Casillas, Field Network Engineer

July 16, 2019

S-NET’s Field Network Engineer, Joey Casillas likes to keep his mind busy, both in the office and after hours. The ability to learn and grow each day is his favorite part of his job and he loves getting his hands on the newest technologies. In his free time, he loves solving riddles, playing the drums and reading Lord of the Rings. Can you guess which musical piece he listens to at least once a week?

What made you choose computer networking as a career?

Actually, my friends encouraged me to pursue a career in technology. I always loved building PCs, but I never saw myself doing that professionally. One day my friend’s dad mentioned computer networking to me and it sounded very interesting. I decided to give it a try, and after a couple years of college courses and a CCNA certificate, I joined S-NET as a Field Network Engineer. I’ve been with the team for a little over a year.

Where did you work before joining S-NET?

Before applying for a position at S-NET, I worked for a company called Mega Polymers that sells raw plastic resin materials to compounders and molders that make the plastic products most of us use every day.

What are your primary responsibilities at S-NET?

As a Field Network Engineer, I spend a lot of my time installing our VoIP phone systems and training clients in S-NET’s various business communications tools. I also assist with Level 2 support issues, so I interact with clients pretty often. I expect to talk to at least one client a day, whether in person or over the phone.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working with clients?

This is a good question. I’d say the most rewarding part would be how amazed and happy they are when their new VoIP system is installed. We are usually able to replicate the same call flow and processes that they had with their prior systems, and I love seeing their reactions when we can fulfill everything they asked for.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy the learning process the most. Being able to keep up with a few different projects at a time and maintain clear communications throughout the process can be challenging. But if you’re willing to be humble and listen, every day presents an opportunity to grow. The variety of technologies we utilize gives me a chance to get my hands on equipment that a lot of companies don’t have or use yet.

What have been your favorite S-NET projects so far?

Each client installation comes with its own rewards. But my two favorite projects have been working with the Greater Chicago Food Depository and BUILD, Inc. I really enjoyed talking with both of these clients and hearing how much they help their communities. These projects also gave me experience in successfully installing complex phone systems for larger organizations.

What accomplishments are you particularly proud of?

I’m most proud of my work with one of our largest dental practice clients. We were tasked with upgrading their ASA Firewall and I was in charge of the process. I created site-to-site VPN connections between all their locations. It was an exciting opportunity to learn about these different security technologies.

How has S-NET helped you grow as an engineer?

S-NET challenges me and pushes me to grow every day. The leadership team is very confident in the capabilities of their employees. This gives me an enormous confidence boost and motivates me to learn as much as I can so I can contribute efficiently.

Are there any exciting projects on the horizon that you are looking forward to?

I am very excited about a new wireless connectivity project we have lined up. It will allow me to expand my knowledge on wireless technology.

What do you enjoy the most about working here, with this team?

I enjoy everyone’s willingness to help out. If I have need help with a project, everyone is ready to support me and answer my questions.

How do you like to spend your free time?

After a day at work, I usually spend my evening playing video games, watching movies, or just hanging out with friends and family. I really enjoy the Lord of the Rings series, so I watch the movies or read the books when I need a break from the games. (Laughs.)

During weekends, I usually do something that involves music. I have been playing the drums for about 12 or 13 years now, so even when I am not practicing, I usually have to have some sort of music playing.

I also volunteer at my church occasionally. I recently helped out with a one-day kids’ camp, and it was a fun experience to see all the kids from the community having a good time.

Tell us something surprising that our clients and your coworkers probably don’t know about you.

One thing that most coworkers or clients don’t know is that I enjoy classical music. I listen to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at least once a week since it’s so phenomenal. Also, I enjoy solving riddles to keep my mind busy, even after work hours. (Laughs.) And I’m excited abut visiting my sister in Arkansas this month!
